Northern Sojourner
Napa Valley Senior Center, Permanent Collection
Napa Valley, CA

I was first introduced to the stately Sandhill crane as a youngster and I vividly remember walking the Northern Wisconsin swamps with my grandfather and watching the cranes nesting nearby his cabin. With a seven foot wingspan, there is a very natural attraction to this gentle giant and viewers of this piece are moved by the scale, sense of movement and serenity it invokes. I believe that many of us are naturally drawn to large birds because they connect with the need of our own human spirit to soar and be free. Soaring in close proximity to the pedestrians below, Northern Sojourner is a timeless and gentle giant of the skies and has the capacity to capture our imagination and set our human spirit free. Cattails are a plant commonly used by the Sandhill cranes to build their nest and I used an interpretive version of these plants to ground the sculpture to Mother Earth.

6' long X 2' wide X 14' high.  Stainless steel and mild steel.
