The gear in the surface of this table is the first time that I cast an outlay into concrete. Typically, objects are "inlayed" or cast flush with the surface but an "outlay" projects out of the surface. The channels that run away from the gear are cast into the table surface resulting in a multidimensional surface that is rarely seen in concrete.
