Avian Pigrimage
A pilgrimage is a journey taken to hallowed ground that challenges its participants and offers them growth. The Sandhill cranes, passing through Central Nebraska on their way back to their northern birthing grounds, are doing just that. Thousands of people also make the pilgrimage to the Platte River each spring to experience this immense natural wonder. These two unique journeys, one by humans and one by cranes, converge at the Platte. The river, reverently hosting hundreds of thousands of cranes, becomes a sacred space that touches most who experience it. It is Divinity coming to the surface of our lives, waking us up from our inner distractions and turning our attention toward Life’s more pressing issues.
The base of the sculpture is filled with river rock from which a cattail stand emerges. These two elements pay homage to the midpoint and destination of the crane's northern journey while grounding the sculpture to Mother Earth.
