The Bordeaux Table
I found inspiration for the design of this table while talking to my clients about a trip they took to Saint-Emilion while they were living in Bordeaux, France several years ago. The monk who the town was named after built a hermitage in a small cave he found in the region during the 8th century. As his following grew, Emilion and the monks began carving a huge underground monolithic church into the limestone that was funded by the monk's vineyards and commercial wine production. Their presence resurrected the areas vineyards dating back to the Roman Empire and established Saint-Emilion in the Bordeaux region through modern times.
The table's clean linear lines were the result of a collaboration between myself and my client. The top of the table floats across its legs and is made of concrete that was cast to mimic Saint-Emilion's local limestone. A Latin cross bonded into its surface is made from the oak staves of a Bordeaux wine barrel, paying homage to the monks, vineyards and wineries that established the area. The legs are constructed of steel and have been treated with a hand rubbed, acid washed patina and have oak inserts bonded between their steel sides. The oak inserts display the barrel stave's inner surface, highlighting the natural color of the wine that stained the barrels interior during the aging process. The copper pipe in the footrests compliment a copper pendant light that resides above the table.
